"Volunteer Focus"
Instead of singling out a particular volunteer this month, we thought it appropriate to share with you some of the photos of our volunteer recognition potluck, held at the station on Friday, December 30th.  By design, it was a low-key (and certainly low-budget) event, but it really was a wonderful evening!  Christmas of 2010, the Salt & Light Executive Team decided spontaneously to organize a potluck, so that everyone could enjoy some fellowship, but this year we thought, "Why not open it up to anyone who has volunteered at Salt & Light Radio to thank them for their support?"  We had no way of estimating how many people would come, and we decided to not even require an RSVP, since with potlucks, there always somehow turns out to be plenty of food and goodies for everyone -- and there was!  In total there were about 50 people packed into our studio offices!  Bill Teske commented that we may end up needing a larger venue next year...

Although we are working to invest in additional paid staff this coming year, Salt & Light Radio will always remain fundamentally a volunteer-led organization.  Without the help of volunteers, there simply would be NO WAY we could do everything that needs to be done to keep our broadcasts (English and Spanish) on the air.  So, thanks to ALL OF YOU for your continued support of this apostolate!  We hope that you can join us at our next volunteer recognition event and hope that everyone has had a very blessed and joy-filled Christmas season!

New Programming

People are creatures of habit and listeners are no different.  When we recently implemented the change to air the More2Life program at 10:00AM, replacing the rebroadcast of the daily Mass, we received more than a few telephone calls from listeners upset by "losing the Mass".  We pointed out to them that we were, of course, still carrying the Mass live at 6:00AM -- which allows a different demographic to actually enjoy the Mass, even if those at 10:00AM cannot.  We have received more positive feedback on the More2Life program than we have received negative feedback from having "lost the Mass"; however, in an effort to address the concern from those disgruntled listeners, we are making some additional programming changes in January, which will include the inserting the rebroadcast daily Mass at 8:00PM. There will be some additional changes in the 3:30PM time-slot as well, which will be covered in our next Newsletter.  Please see the link to our current program schedule, for your easy reference.

So, the natural question that listeners will have is, "How do you decide what to air and what not to air?"  This is largely the reason why we formed the Parish Advisory Committee (PAC), and why we elicit input from that group prior to making any Executive Team changes to the programming schedule.  Most of our schedule is tied to that of EWTN, since our affiliation agreement requires that a minimum of 80% of our content be carried live from them.  There are other restrictions placed upon us from EWTN as well, but we still enjoy latitude to time-shift and adjust some programs, as we see fit (like inserting the Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet midday).

What do YOU think of our programming schedule?  We'd love to hear from you!  Please feel free to contact your Parish Advisory Committee member listed on the "Contact Us" page of our website or send us comments directly via our website.
New Year, New Goals
Last January, we organized our first Strategic Planning retreat, and took a full day out of everyone's schedule to focus on our Mission and to evaluate our priorities for the coming year.  We're happy to report that several of our key initiatives were achieved in 2011 -- the hiring of our Development Director (Wade Carlson), the successful construction and launch of KTFI in Wendell/Twin Falls, the successful fund-raising Golf Tournament with the Diocesan Vocations Department, the construction of our Chapel, and growth in listenership and pledge-drive results -- a banner year by all accounts!

So, what's on the docket for 2012?  We'll be gathering on January 27th again to discuss just that.  There is so much work to be done -- building our corporate underwriting base; broadening our support base at the various giving levels; implementing our Parish Missionaries effort; improving and leveraging our social media campaigns; improving our locally-originated programming options; etc.  Don't look for us to rush out and take on another expansion project in 2012.  Of course, if the Lord wants us to have another station in another Idaho geography, we will be open to His Will.  But we've got plenty on our hands to work with right now!

Please keep us in your prayers as we plan for the future of Salt & Light.

Salting the Earth
While walking his dog recently,
a gentlemen happened upon 1140AM.

He heard our public service announcements,
attended some of the events,
and is now attending a local church.
